    This paper estimates for 28 product groups a characteristic parameter that reflects the topological structure of its trading network. Using these estimates, it then describes how the structure of international trade has evolved during the 1980-2000 period. Thereafter, it demonstrates the importance of networks in international trade by explicitly accounting for their scaling properties when testing the prediction of the Heckscher-Ohlin model that factor endowment differentials determine bilateral trade flows. The results suggest that differences in factor endowments increase bilateral trade in goods that are traded in "dispersed" networks.     Exchangeable min-id sequences: Characterization, exponent measures and non-decreasing id-processes

    We establish a correspondence between exchangeable sequences of random variables whose finite-dimensional distributions are min- (or max-) infinitely divisible and non-negative, non-decreasing, infinitely divisible stochastic processes. The exponent measure of a min-id sequence is shown to be the sum of a very simple "drift measure" and a mixture of product probability measures, which corresponds uniquely to the L\'evy measure of a non-decreasing infinitely divisible process. The latter is shown to be supported on non-negative and non-decreasing functions. Our results provide an analytic umbrella which embeds the de Finetti subfamilies of many classes of multivariate distributions, such as exogenous shock models, exponential and geometric laws with lack-of-memory property, min-stable multivariate exponential and extreme-value distributions, as well as reciprocal Archimedean copulas with completely monotone generator and Archimedean copulas with log-completely monotone generator.Comment: 53 pages, 3 Figure

    Expression of Olig2, Nestin, NogoA and AQP4 have no impact on overall survival in IDH- wildtype glioblastoma

    Despite many years of research efforts and clinical trials the prognosis of patients diagnosed with glioblastoma remains very poor. The oligodendrocyte transcription factor 2 (Olig2) was identified as a marker for glioma stem cells, which are believed to be responsible for glioma recurrence and therapy resistance. In this retrospective analysis we assessed the prognos- tic value of oligodendroglial and glioma stem cell markers in 113 IDH-wildtype glioblasto- mas. Immunohistochemical staining for Olig2, NogoA, AQP4 and Nestin was performed in combination with sequencing of IDH1 and IDH2 as well as promotor methylation analysis of the MGMT gene. Even though differences in overall survival according to Olig2 expression were observed, univariate and multivariate survival analysis did not reveal a firm significant prognostic impact of Olig2, NogoA, AQP4 or Nestin expression. Additionally, no differences in the expression of these markers depending on clinical status, age or gender were found. The established independent prognostic factors age = 70 and methylated MGMT gene promoter were significant in the multivariate analysis.     Myelinosome formation represents an early stage of oligodendrocyte damage in multiple sclerosis and its animal model

    Oligodendrocyte damage is a central event in the pathogenesis of the common neuro-inflammatory condition, multiple sclerosis (MS). Where and how oligodendrocyte damage is initiated in MS is not completely understood. Here, we use a combination of light and electron microscopy techniques to provide a dynamic and highly resolved view of oligodendrocyte damage in neuroinflammatory lesions. We show that both in MS and in its animal model structural damage is initiated at the myelin sheaths and only later spreads to the oligodendrocyte cell body. Early myelin damage itself is characterized by the formation of local myelin out-foldings-'myelinosomes'-, which are surrounded by phagocyte processes and promoted in their formation by anti-myelin antibodies and complement. The presence of myelinosomes in actively demyelinating MS lesions suggests that oligodendrocyte damage follows a similar pattern in the human disease, where targeting demyelination by therapeutic interventions remains a major open challenge
